Praised last year for Alligator Bites Never Heal, a playful and turbulent mixtape that earned her a Grammy nomination, this Florida rapper also received acclaim for her contribution to Tyler, the Creator’s latest album. That was all it took to catapult her into the ranks of the new generation breathing fresh life into American hip-hop. Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon – her real name – was destined for the scene, having grown up around rappers (her father and uncle). She began writing her first pieces in high school, blending poetry with rap. What followed was a record deal with Capitol, a tour supporting Doja Cat, a role in the film Earth Mama, a move to L.A., and her current status as a watchlist rising star.
