After years of seeing them live and being immersed in their intoxicating anthems since their debut EP in 2011, we’ve finally mastered the spelling of this extraordinary Texan trio’s name, which means “aeroplane” in Thai. Active since 2010, Laura Lee Ochoa, Mark Speer and DJ Johnson share a deep passion for the psychedelic movement, embracing its aesthetics and a sound that effortlessly absorbs the most colourful influences. Drawing from soul, dub, funk and even surf rock, their albums radiate a sunny energy that leaves no one unmoved. One can’t help but feel for record shop staff trying to categorise this deeply eclectic band into a single section – it would be easier to create a new “Khruangbin” category, given the number of artists now citing them as an influence.
